What Is a Keyword Mixer?
A keyword mixer (also called a keyword combiner or keyword permutation generator) takes separate lists of words, such as services, locations and modifiers, and joins them into every possible combination. Instead of typing "emergency dentist dublin", "emergency dentist cork" and hundreds of other variations by hand, you enter each list once and the tool builds the full set for you.
Marketers use keyword mixers to build Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns, plan location pages for local SEO, and find long-tail search phrases that competitors often miss. Our free tool runs entirely in your browser, so your keyword lists are never uploaded or stored.
How to Use the Keyword Mixer
- Add your lists. Enter one keyword or phrase per line. A common setup is services in List 1, locations in List 2 and modifiers such as "near me", "cost" or "best" in List 3.
- Choose a combination mode. "In order" keeps your structure (service + location). "Every word order" also produces reversed phrases such as "dublin dentist", which people search for too.
- Pick match types. Tick Broad, Phrase or Exact to format keywords for direct upload into Google Ads Editor.
- Clean up and mix. Keep lowercase and duplicate removal switched on, then click Mix Keywords.
- Export. Copy the list or download a CSV with keyword and match type columns.
Combination Modes Explained
| Mode | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| All lists, in order | Joins every filled list in the order 1 → 2 → 3 → 4 | Structured PPC ad groups |
| Every word order | Creates all orderings of the lists (e.g. "dublin dentist" and "dentist dublin") | Maximum search coverage |
| Every pair of lists | Combines two lists at a time (1+2, 1+3, 2+3…) | Shorter, higher-volume phrases |
| Progressive | Builds List 1, then 1+2, then 1+2+3 and so on | Mixing head terms with long-tail terms |
Using Keyword Combinations for Google Ads
Match types control how closely a search must match your keyword before your ad can show:
- Broad match (dentist dublin) – the widest reach. Google may show your ad for related searches, so pair it with Smart Bidding and a solid negative keyword list.
- "Phrase match" – ads show for searches that include the meaning of your phrase. A good balance of reach and control.
- [Exact match] – ads show for searches with the same meaning as your keyword. Highest relevance, lowest volume.
- -Negative keywords – stop your ads appearing for irrelevant searches such as "free" or "jobs".
Using the Tool for Local SEO
Combining services with towns, cities or neighbourhoods is the quickest way to map out location pages and blog topics. For example, "roof repair" × "Sligo, Galway, Mayo" × "cost, emergency" gives you a clear content plan for a regional roofing company. Use the Hyphen separator to turn combinations straight into clean URL slugs such as roof-repair-sligo.
Only build a page when you can offer something unique for that location, such as local reviews, projects, opening hours or a map. Thin, near-identical location pages rarely rank. You can check the length of your pages and your competitors' pages with our Word Count Checker.
Tips for Better Keyword Combinations
- Validate search volume. Paste your combinations into Google Keyword Planner to see which ones people really search for.
- Remove odd phrases. Not every combination reads naturally. Delete anything a real person would not type.
- Avoid keyword stuffing. Use combinations to guide topics and headings, not to repeat phrases over and over on a page.
- Think about AI search. Tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews answer longer, question-style queries. Add modifiers like "best", "how much" and "near me" to cover conversational searches. See how AI tools talk about your business with our AI Visibility Checker.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Keyword Mixer tool work?
Enter keywords or phrases into up to four lists, one per line. The tool joins every item in each list with every item in the other lists to create all unique combinations, then formats them with your chosen match types and separator.
Can I add multiple keywords at once?
Yes. Paste as many keywords as you like into each box, one per line. You can copy columns straight from Excel, Google Sheets or Keyword Planner.
What are the benefits of using a keyword mixer?
It saves hours of manual work, makes sure you do not miss any variations, and helps you build tightly themed PPC ad groups and local SEO content plans. It is especially useful for businesses that serve several locations or offer several services.
Can I use this tool for both single and multi-word phrases?
Yes. Each line can be a single word or a full phrase such as "teeth whitening" or "open on Saturday". The tool keeps each line together as one unit.
